El Santo (The Saint) was a Mexican Luchador (wrestler) and an actor who was regarded as a Mexican hero. He was also one of the leaders of the Lucha Libre movement to the rest of the world.

El Santo became famous for his ability to keep his true identity secret for as long as he did. He rose to fame through his fights as a Luchador where he went on to win several matches.

El Santo has been the most evasive of all the Luchadores, he was able to evade peeking eyes for the better part of his life. El Santo never took off his mask until he retired from wrestling.

El Santo was dedicated to maintaining the secrecy of his identity, this devotion extended from his craft to his private life. On request by El Santo, he was buried with his famous silver mask.

The burial was one of the grandest in Mexico, with a lot of friends and family in attendance, quite a number of the attendees showed up in masks as a show of respect to the great man that El Santo was.

Jorge Ernesto Guzmán Rodríguez better known as El Hijo del Santo is the last-born son of the icon and legend El Santo.

After the death of El Santo, his son took on the great silver mask and cape to carry on his father’s legacy, although he is not as big of a deal as his father was.

He later found out that his father was El Santo when once his father took him to an event and he had to wear the mask in the car, only then the son realized that his father was El Santo!

El Santo became a cult hero when he had his likeness made into comic books, some of his comics included greats like “punching vampires”.

His comics were not just famous in Mexico, they became a serious hit in Spain also. 

He also starred in several movies where he made it perfectly clear to the directors that his mask should not be taken off.
